Conversations around Histories, Diaspora & Creative Practice

Join us online for a free artist-curator conversation exploring ideas of African and Caribbean histories and diaspora.
As part of the Routing Diaspora Histories project, we're excited to host this talk and conversation.
Bringing together three highly talented people - curator, Bolanle Tajudeen; interdisciplinary artist, Gary Stewart; and storyteller, Lara Grace Ilori - this conversation explores key questions surrounding pre and post-colonial African histories and the diaspora, as it relates to the practice, experiences and interests of each speaker.
Join us in exploring important, energising and generative questions, hearing from practitioners who actively consider ideas of migration, heritage and belonging in their work.
Routing Diaspora Histories is a collaborative, evolving project begun between Roehampton University and The South North CIC. Together we have been holding creative and dialogic spaces for participants to explore pre and post-colonial African historical narratives, sharing ideas, experiences, memories, expressions and literature of the African Diaspora - with a view to inviting creative responses to this process.
Questions that will guide the conversation include:
1) What opportunities arise for looking at Black and Diasporic identities in new ways when we go beyond established historical narratives which centre slavery and struggles?
2) What can we learn from responding to more expanded histories of Africa and diaspora in creative and personal ways?
3) How do our lives contribute to the making of history in the present moment?
The project has been funded by The Centre for Cultural Value, Collaborate Fund.
About the Speakers:
Bolanle Tajudeen is the founder of Black Blossoms, an art school and curatorial platform dedicated to amplifying the practices of artists of colour. Her research delves deeply into the contemporary and historical artistic practices of Black women and non-binary people, strongly emphasising the complex intersections of gender, race, and class. She has also taught the course "Art in the Age of Black Girl Magic" at Tate Britain, which examines the lack of Black women in cultural institutions and explores how they have creatively challenged this through radical interventions and DIY approaches. Additionally, Bolanle serves as the Public Art Curator for the Bristol Legacy Foundation. In partnership with Bristol City Council, she is commissioning a permanent commemorative artwork to honour the legacy of the Transatlantic Trafficking of Enslaved Africans.
As an artist, scholar, producer and curator, Gary Stewart focuses on innovation, identity, culture, art and technology for narratives in public spaces, galleries and museums. Inspired by pop culture, archives, history and mythology, he creates memory spaces for disenfranchised people. From 1995 to 2010, he was director of new media at the Institute of International Visual Arts in London. In 2011, he founded Dubmorphology (London). He teaches (Queen Mary University of London, Goldsmiths College, University of London), mentors (Tate Modern/Tate Exchange) and realizes international art projects as lead artist/curator (British Council).
Lara Grace Ilori is a storyteller, aiming to share human experiences through various creative mediums. In the past year, Lara was UCL Anthropology Ambassador whilst a Masters student, and conducted her fieldwork in the USA (Oyotunji African Village). Currently, she is working on her first full-length spoken word play Runner Girl and is the co-founder (with fellow RADA graduate and dear friend Caleb Obediah) of creative laboratory ILXIAH. Most recently, Lara developed her creative practice with Poetic Unity on their Cultural Leader programme, based at Black Cultural Archives.
