About The Historic Langston Golf Course

Langston Golf Course is a historic landmark and the first golf course in the city built specifically for Black Americans. Named after John Mercer Langston – the first Black Virginian elected to Congress – the course opened in 1939 and quickly became a cornerstone for the Black golfing community.

Over the years, Langston has hosted numerous celebrities and trailblazers, including Joe Louis and Muhammad Ali – but none with a greater influence than Lee Elder. Lee Elder was the first Black golfer invited to compete in the Masters he also managed Langston Golf Course, contributing significantly to its development and preservation.

Langston is the birthplace of the Royal Golf (Men) and the Wake-Robin (Women) Golf Clubs, the oldest Black golf clubs in the country. Together, the clubs lobbied the federal government to desegregate the city's public golf courses. In 1938, they petitioned Secretary of the Interior Harold Ickes for access to public courses funded by their federal taxes. Instead, Ickes permitted the construction of a golf course for Black people on an abandoned trash site, leading to Langston's creation as a nine-hole golf course. Both clubs continued to fight for the desegregation of all public golf courses, resulting in Ickes issuing a desegregation order at the city's federal courses in 1941.

Today, Langston Golf Course continues to welcome a diverse mix of players and remains a symbol of Black excellence and cultural heritage. Join us in celebrating its rich history and enduring legacy during the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's 52nd Annual Legislative Conference Week.
